SOLPARKEN
Solparken was developed as a result of a parallel commission for a new masterplan in Fosnavåg, Norway. Ghilardi+Hellsten and Karres en Brands developed a series of strategies for regenerating the downtown areas which included re-appropriating a central parking lot into an urban square.
The design for Solparken was developed through an ambitious user participation program and the implementation of a temporary park which was built on site by a team of designers from Ghilardi+Hellsten and Karres en Brands. The experience and feedback gained from this process produced the brief that initiated the design for the actual park.

The park is conceived as an active and playful urban space and follows the municipal planning incentives: public health, universal design, children and youth, equality, added value and environment. As an overarching theme, the site will engage in science installations and offer innovations that provide experiences for users of all ages. Instead of an open square, the space is designed to appear occupied with a range of spatial structures that create the sensation of the space never appearing empty.
The circular motif of the floor is conceived as a mosaic which samples local stones in various sizes and textures. Together they form a collection of local Terrazzo that are unique representation of Fosnavåg.
