KENGARAGS BAY
The city of Riga invited to a 3 day workshop competition for the Urban design and development vision for the waterfront in Kengarags, Riga, a typical housing estate of Riga built in the 1960s. The commission was to establish new waterfront access, propose visions for a local culture centre and give ideas for transformation of a former factory into a multifunctional complex with public space. Our project suggested a consolidation of the efforts of the transformation of the factory with the establishment of the culture centre in the same site.
Status:
Restricted competition and workshop, 2006
Client:
Riga City development Department
Project group:
Ghilardi+Hellsten Arkitekter
Location:
Kengarags, Riga, Latvia
Plan/size:
76.000 m²
Typology:
Masterplan, Public space

This implied a multifunctional complex with an inclusive definition of culture; mixing art, entertainment, commerce and public space. To create ideal conditions for these intentions we manipulate the site limits to gain more direct exposure to the river. The new building structure is partly elevated to allow public flow between Maskavas iela, the complex and the new Kengarags Bay.
