ØKERN SHOPPING CENTER
Commission Sketch Phase August 2007-

Dictated by retail programmatic requirements, this site holds the largest single building at Økern Center; with a footprint of 32.000 m2. This mixed use proposal transforms the main constraint into a design opportunity by consolidating interior commercial flow and public city streets into one system; dissolving therefore the closed box typology, so typical in conventional retail architecture. The ambitions for this project are multi faceted, combining state of the art shopping logistics with strong east-west public porosity, creating street oriented shops along the main street Ulvenveien and incorporating cultural programs like a library and a planetarium, within the core of the commercial system. The structure consists of a non-directional geometry based on a repetitive circular pattern tat creates a free organizational system. The building mass is split at ground level by an outdoor half-covered pedestrian street and an open circular plaza, facilitating and intensifying the already existing public flow across the site. This open street links the proposed pedestrian bridge over ring 3 with the main street, completing the east west public axis across the entire development towards the Millennium Park and residential areas beyond.
