| Kvadrat is Norway’s biggest shopping mall, located in the “band city” between Stavanger and Sandnes. The centre will now expand to more than the double, creating an extra large version that will completely transform the existing perception of the site and the building. To avoid extending the typical retail box with parking all around we designed the new addition as a terraced landscape wrapping the existing structures to avoid demolition. The remaining outdoor areas are transformed into three clearly defined and programmed spaces: the park, the parking and the civic plaza, and the existing roof of the center is given a new fifth façade – a 15.000m2.solar panel field. The expansion is split into several independent projects, for potential phasing or stand alones. These projects are defined as “worlds”, such as Plantorama, Food Temple, Digital Universe, Adventure World and the White Box where you can learn, test and buy products. An ambition is to create a self sufficient shopping centre, with energy produced through wind power, biomass trigeneration and photovoltaic panels. The Energy Centre provides an arena for information on the centers energy system. |
