ØKERN SWIMMING HALL
Commission Sketch Phase August 2007-

The main strategy is tailored to the overall Økern Master Plan and consists primarily on inserting a large program volume into a limited footprint, without disrupting, blocking or casting significant shadows onto the surrounding public spaces; providing good sunlight conditions and undisrupted views for the apartment buildings and adjacent Millennium Park. This strategy is achieved by pressing the main pool area down to level +91 so as to lower the overall building height; creating a new public street or pedestrian shortcut on the roof, that splits the total volume in two smaller triangular buildings; breaking down the development to a friendly scale on the north side of the development. The project is conceived as two overlapping landscapes, an interior one where all pools are accommodated, and an exterior topography, designed as an accessible roof. These two shells enclose one large 3 to 4 storey volume space that allows program stacking, without compromising interior room height and natural light; this multi-level spatial configuration, transforms bathing and swimming into sheer spectacle.
