SIRISKJÆR HOUSING
Restricted competition June-August 2006

Siriskjær is located within “Urban Sjøfront” which is one of the most important areas of urban development in Stavanger. The purpose of the competition was to found a reference area for modern multi-storey timber construction. Our approach was that at this specific location, there could and should be iconic buildings and monuments - buildings referring to its industrial past through their scale, colour, strong form and reduced detailing and materialization. 3 large blocks on the edge of the shore formulates a 5-storey rim. This guarantees each apartment sun and ocean views. Our technical investigation is focused on the load bearing structure. The box-like structure of conventional wooden buildings with load bearing facades and inner walls is abandoned in favour of a structure of parallel walls which run perpendicular or parallel to the facades. The resulting spans of 3.55m and 4.35m are very economic. Openings of up to 3.5m length are possible wherever desired and turns the rigid system of load bearing walls into a porous spatial structure. The result is a high degree of internal openness and flexibility.
